History of the C216

Mercedes-Benz launched the second-generation CL-Class in 2006 as the ultimate expression of grand touring luxury and performance.

The C216 evolved from its predecessor with an extended wheelbase, wider track, and redesigned bodywork emphasizing aerodynamics and presence. New 19 and 20-inch wheel options and revised lighting gave the coupe a more commanding stance while maintaining the iconic proportions.

AMG variants arrived in 2008, with the CL63 AMG producing 518 horsepower and the exclusive CL65 AMG featuring a 6.3L twin-turbocharged V8. The 2010 facelift introduced revised front styling, LED headlights on select models, and enhanced interior technology including expanded COMAND multimedia functionality.

Production concluded in 2014 as Mercedes-Benz transitioned to the S-Class Coupe platform strategy. The C216 left a legacy as the last true two-door CL-Class model, representing an era of bespoke grand tourer engineering before platform consolidation.
